When 1600 Changemakers Meet in Istanbul ...

Action, passion and dedication: three words that describe best what the 1600 World Youth Delegates irradiated during this unique global gathering. Hundreds of young activists, artists, journalists, entrepreneurs and educators met in the 2010 European Capital of Culture, Istanbul, from July 31st until August 13th, 2010 ready to live a very unique international experience. Such global events and meetings help us work together towards common purposes and find solutions to the challenges we, as youth, face everyday. "Imece" was the main theme of the 5th World Youth Congress. As Faruk Nafiz Özak, Minister of State of the Repulic of Turkey, said, "Imece" has existed in the Turkish culture for many centuries and its key qualities such as solidarity, togetherness, and volunteerism are just as relevant in today's world.

Nowadays, we live in a period of fast moving global change. In a world where the population is growing so fast, the challenges and problems that we face have gone from being local to universal. We have just to think to such issues as climate change, security, education, health, poverty... Globalization has removed the borders between continents and countries, thus creating the necessity for us to think, plan and act under the same roof. In these special circumstances, youth population becomes more important than ever before. 12 August 2010 - 12 August 2011 has been annouced as the Year of Youth by the United Nations. I hope that, throughout this designated year of youth, young people, all over the globe, will prove that they are not only changemakers of tomorrow, but leaders of today. Law Students can certainly play a major rule in transforming this dream into reality. As future lawyers, professors, journalists and politicians, we " must be the change we want to see in the world " (Gandhi).

My experience as a Young Activist was truly amazing and unforgettable! During the 5th World Youth Congress (WYC), I had the chance to meet with talented young people from all corners of the world. With my fellow WYC delegates, I attended different workshops, regional meetings and open forums during my stay in Istanbul. Some of the workshops focused on Youth Participation and Citizenship, others taught us how to get a job at the UN or how to develop effective entrepreneurship. It was really wonderful to witness the burning desire of the WYC delegates to work in the spirit of "Imece" for youth-led development. I was glad to meet with like-minded people who started community projects or are volunteering in their neighbourhoods, cities and countries. We shared many goals such as to make poverty history in our lifetimes and to create a prosperous green economy that will bring sustainable happiness to every member of the human family. During the Exhibition, I presented my project MOMENTUM: Mission, Passion, Expression to my fellow WYC delegates. It was a great opportunity to showcase my community initiative and interact with many dynamic youth willing to participate in our next editions of the MOMENTUM Magazine (http://momentumweb.ning.com/)

Istanbul, the city where East and West meet, was a great place to organize the 5th WYC. Since Istanbul, previously known as "Constantinople", is a melting pot of different cultures, it was a perfect place for delegates to share their knowledge, experiences and cultures with each other and to build strong bridges between countries. Istanbul is also a megacity, as well as the cultural, economic, and financial centre of Turkey. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. Here are some places you should not miss if you travel to Istanbul: Dolmabahçe Palace, where famous leader Ataturk had his last breath, the Grand Bazaar, a historic shopping center, the Blue Mosque (or Sultan Ahmed Mosque) and the Princes' Islands.

The 5th World Youth Congress in Turkey was not just an ordinary conferance, it was a festival, a training, a development programme, and an intercultural & interreligious dialogue at the same time. The 6th World Youth Congress, designed to promote and celebrate youth-led development, will bring together 1000 of the world's most dynamic young people from over 140 countries to Brazil in 2012. Presentation on Climate Change in Montreal on 10/10/10 (Global Work Party)

This presentation will contain Quebec and Canada specific content in addition to the content derived from Mr. Gore’s personal presentation as delivered in the award-winning documentary «An Inconvenient Truth».
I will do my best to focus on the solutions to the climate crisis and share the science behind climate change with all the attendees. There will be a 15 minutes questions and answers (Q&A) period at the end of the conference.

Event Host: The Climate Project Canada is a non-profit organization that serves as the Canadian component of a global movement of more than 3,000 diverse and dedicated volunteers from around the world. These volunteers have been personally trained by former US Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore to educate the public about the science and impacts of climate change as well as solutions to address the climate crisis. Climate Project presenters have already delivered presentations to over five million people worldwide. Mission: The Climate Project Canada seeks to raise awareness among all Canadians about the urgency of the climate crisis. We hope to motivate Canadians to become active participants in solving the climate crisis by: Training a diverse range of citizens from numerous geographic regions and walks of life, who will then communicate to the public about the urgency and impact of climate change. Engaging the public through presentations, news media and individual conversations as well as grassroots advocacy and activism so that they will make informed choices about public policy matters related to climate change. Promoting personal, local, domestic and international initiatives to solve the climate crisis. History: The Climate Project Canada was created in May 2007 with the objective of educating Canadians about the science and impact of climate change as well as solutions to address it. Based on the model of The Climate Project founded by former U.S. Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore, the primary means of disseminating this information is through trained presenters from all demographics, regions, sectors and backgrounds. These presenters give adapted versions of The Climate Project slide show as presented in the documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Between September 2006 and April 2007 Mr. Gore held several training sessions in the United States. It was during this time that Mr. Gore met his original target of training 1000 Americans, with a small contingent of 21 Canadians in the mix. Upon their return to Canada, these initial trainees were met with an ever-growing demand for Climate Project presentations. In May 2007, five of the original Canadian presenters (René Brunet, Peter Corbyn, Mike Gerbis, Shelley Kath and Désirée McGraw) co-founded The Climate Project Canada. In fact, I share with you this Wordle because it reflects the multiplicity of the issues that youth and the world should tackle in today's world. There are a lot of problems affecting humanity like Climate Change, poverty, HIV/Aids and other issues and what we should never forget is that all these themes and issues share a common point: they are all GLOBAL issues which concern every human being without any exception.

So, as MOMENTUM Members, I am confident that as a collective force, we can help our cities, regions and countries, and youth in these areas, to become more informed about the problems affecting our planet. Thus, these youth can become aware of their responsibility in tackling these important issues ALL TOGETHER, HERE AND NOW !

In this regard, I want to ask each and everyone of you 3 simple questions and I hope that you will answer them soon:

1- Why do you think that youth can help find solutions to the most urgent and problematic issues that we face today in many parts of the world like poverty, HIV/Aids, Climate Change and racism ?
2- How do you make a difference in your community, whether it be your locality, city, region, country or internationally ?
3- What can you suggest to the other MOMENTUM members to do in order to help them become more engaged in their respective communities and together we can make a big difference in the life of many youth and adults who need our HELP ?

RÉCHAUFFEMENT CLIMATIQUE, AGISSONS ENSEMBLE.
Blogue écrit à l'occasion du Blog Action Day 2009 sur le thème crucial des changements climatiques

Il s'avère incontestable que la problématique du réchauffement climatique est devenue un objet de controverse et de polémique au sein de notre société industrielle du fait que cette question environnementale interpelle fréquemment les gens qui ne sont autres que les habitants de la planète terre.

Avant toute chose, rappelons ce que désigne ce fameux terme de réchauffement climatique: "Le réchauffement climatique, également appelé réchauffement planétaire ou, par anglicisme, réchauffement global (de l'anglais Global Warming), est un phénomène d'augmentation, à l'échelle mondiale et sur plusieurs années, de la température moyenne des océans et de l'atmosphère. Dans son acception commune, ce terme est appliqué au changement climatique observé depuis la fin du XXe siècle." En effet, le réchauffement climatique constitue un phénomène naturel, durable, alarmant et d'actualité. On ne le voit pas, on ne le sent pas et on ne le ressent pas véritablement pour le moment mais pourtant la terre se réchauffe bel et bien.

Les faits sont là : on a observé une augmentation de plus de 0.80 °C en moyenne au niveau du sol et de l'air depuis la fin du XIXème siècle. Les calottes glacières sont en train de fondre. Des centaines d’espèces sont menacées de disparition. Les événements climatiques extrêmes se multiplient de plus en plus. Et enfin des millions de personnes pourront devenir dans quelques années des réfugiés climatiques.

Toutefois, je crois que le réchauffement planétaire est un véritable phénomène que l'on ne pourra probablement pas éradiquer mais que l'on peut au moins ralentir et diminuer ses effets néfastes sur notre planète et les habitants qu’elle abrite. Néanmoins, cela implique une réelle prise de conscience et un changement profond dans nos habitudes et notre attitude par rapport à l'environnement, et particulièrement la façon dont nous percevons et considérons l'environnement, ce qui n'est sans doute pas le plus facile.

En fait, l'environnement est l'affaire de tous et de toutes, d'où la nécessité d'une action collective ou d'actions individuelles sur une dimension collective et générale dans la société.

Chaque petite action mérite d'être soulignée, et rapportée afin que petit à petit les comportements changent pour un monde meilleur! Ne pas laisser couler l'eau lorsque cela est inutile, ne plus utiliser des produits contenants des substances chimiques nuisibles à l'environnement ou encore économiser de l'énergie peut sembler banal, mais à une échelle collective, ces actions revêtent une grande importance.

J’ai eu la chance de recevoir une formation avancée sur les changements climatiques, donnée par l’ancien vice-président américain et Prix Nobel M. Al Gore avec la participation de plusieurs grands environnementalistes tels Jean Lemire et David Suzuki, deux figures canadiennes très connues dans la lutte contre les changements climatiques.

Des actions simples, que tout le monde peut faire: voilà ce que j’explique dans mes présentations sur les changements climatiques à Montréal. Je rappelle aux gens que quarante pour cent des gaz à effet de serre (GES) sont produits par le transport. Donc, pour faire une différence, on peut simplement réduire l'utilisation de la voiture au moins deux jours par semaine, prendre plus le vélo et marcher davantage. En plus d'être bon pour l'environnement, c'est bon pour notre santé.

Pour ceux et celles qui pensent que l’écologie ne rime pas avec l’économie, détrompez-vous messieurs dames ! À titre d’exemple, une auto coûte environ 11 000 $ par année à faire rouler. Si on utilise le transport en commun, on peut réduire de moitié les coûts reliés à l'usage de la voiture.

En matière d'alimentation, il faut encourager les gens à acheter des produits locaux. Une bonne habitude qui, en plus de réduire les coûts de transport, encourage l'économie de la région.

Bref, il faudrait agir chacun à notre échelle pour faire la différence même si l'intervention des gouvernements demeure fort importante également.
Les jeunes ont aussi un rôle important à jouer dans la lutte contre les changements climatiques puisque c’est leur avenir qui est en jeu. Et je parle ici des jeunes de partout à travers le monde, pas seulement au Maroc ou au Canada car il s’agit d’une problématique mondiale qui dépasse les frontières de notre pays ou d’un autre.

Les dirigeants d’entreprises et les politiciens doivent à leur tour déployer des efforts pour diminuer les conséquences nuisibles de cette problématique planétaire. Les gouvernements pourraient par exemple instaurer une taxe sur le carbone, sensibiliser leurs populations, encourager l’économie locale, et privilégier le transport en commun dans leurs politiques.

Mais, à mon avis, il faudra une action citoyenne évidente pour que certains gouvernements changent leurs positions sur ces questions environnementales.

En terminant, j’espère que cet article vous incitera à mesurer vos gestes quotidiens et leur impact sur l’environnement. Essayez de le respecter le plus possible pour votre bien et le bien des futures générations !
